Where abouts in Sydney?
The bakery up my road has a shit-load of crates of all shapes and sizes, they don't care if you take a few.

the best places to find crates and pallets would be to go and look at you local industrial estate they dont like to taking the crates because most of them are worth like 50 bucks and the companys always want the crates back...

50 bucks, sheesh:eek:
Im sure if you walked out your front door and rode to an construction site/local shops you would be able to find some crates. If you lucky you might actually get permission to have them and not have to "borrow" them.
Good luck
go for a ride around your area. find a construction site of some sort and you will find some. Hell, i know around my place there are areas that leave them lying in the gutter for the masses.
Finders keepers.. ;)

Industrial areas are a good start,
You will find that some pallets (like the blue "Chep" ones) get returned to the companies that own them but there will be others that are usually thrown out, if you ask around nicely you should be able to get some for free. The timber on the top isn't that great, but the 2x4's in the middle are pretty strong.

Me and my friends get someones mum or dad to drive us around and we just quickly snatch any wood we can find. There is a stack at the back of any supermarket usualy.

Well I found a bunch of crates last year out the front of a lawn mower and engines joint on their nature strip, the crates had had new lawn mowers in them so they were nice and big.

Get someone to build you a new path made from bricks, we got one built and they left about 5-10 pallets for us to use.just joking i think it would cost a bit too much.

yeah. the ones they keep are spray painted and have some sort of tag or logo on the side. if there just crates that are plain and have nothing on them, take them for sure
