Some mates and I are doing the AMBC learn to fly clinic this weekend at Oxford Falls.

Has anyone done this course and what should we expect?

Some big stacks I'd say...:)

Yeah it was a pretty awesome day!! Thats my first real attempt at genuine downhill stuff so I learnt a lot. instructor was Al Crisp and his mate Dylan, real cool dudes and excellent instructors!

He had us negotiating some jumps and drops that I would normally avoid, going into details of the technique and speed required. Its amazing how much of it is psychological.

He also spent some time on cornering and using berms effictively which was pretty cool. Using the berms to maintain speed and accelerate out of corners is harder than you think. We saw a lot of examples of how we shouldnt do it.

We also got the chance to hit the wall ride which was a lot of fun. First few attempts were shaky but by the 3rd run and some great coaching we all had it down pat.

the two instructors demonstrated their skills on several occasions with speed and massive jumps, making it look easy

Overall I must say I recommend this to anyone wanting to get into DH/Freeride. I am hooked and I know now I left today a much better rider than when I arrived this morning. There are still a few sections I wanna try again but yesterday I wouldnt have even contemplated them

Thanks to those riders that came thru and were so patient with us...now I gotta buy a DH bike :)

As said on the website, clearly, the higher courses are for 16+ only!, Im 16 in a few weeks,YAH!, Im thinking a birthday present will be well used this year! I saw then at it on Sunday, went past,I was probably the bad example of going through a corner,I need some work.

I know this course is all about getting the technique right but roughly what size are the drops that they take you down?

Thanks

I did the first "learning to fly"course that AMBC ran. It was well worth while & i found i got allot of stuff more dialled in. Basically sections are sessioned, confidence & skills are tuned and then difficulty increased. Lots of different skill levels in the group, however it is pretty much individual coaching. Al is a good coach which also helps.

Do it!!

Did it on a Reign, so dont stress just get ya bum friendly with ya tire

Ha ha Tai, and you got the biggest air of the day, Jumped over the whole rock garden at the bottom, and MADE it!! Awesome stuff mate. To see you get off that bike smiling & shaking was priceless.

Hey Tai...because of you & Mark...I bought a DH rig yesterday :D

hey do you have to be a good rider or do you get taught allot of stuff there

brodie_rider
18-06-2007, 05:51 PM
can u do it on a hardtail

Chuckie
18-06-2007, 09:51 PM
They assess your ability at the beginning. Its about improving and progression so I guess they just want you to have some experience with riding tech trails.

I am sure you could do it on a hard tail but I wouldn't unless u r super smooth. I had a mate that had a C'dale Rush (4 inch of travel) and it was rough on him and the bike
