Apart from special spray that goes up your nose, where do i get some good
!CHEAP! wood to build northshore and other such stuff.

Me n dad might be going to a new estate n getting some pallets because they are the best cheap source of wood i know of.

Do you guys have any ideas??

Find a house that is being knocked down and ask if you can have some of the wood from that. It worked for us. (Or you can go and get pallets:D)

Have a look in the paper, some people put notices in the paper as people go looking for old floor boards. Do this and you may be able to get other wood, ie beams and possibly decking.

Cheers, Sam:cool:

Depends on if your willing to pay for it or not?
There's a local place where I live which recycles all sorts of stuff from house renovations etc. There is a heap of wood suitable for building up north shore. However, it's not free but it is damn cheap.
You could try going down to your local saw mill or wood yard. Large places like Boral timber will sometimes give you wood that is just sitting around.

Try get hardwood too mate. Most of the stuff my mates and I have built is made from hardwood. It lasts heaps longer and is generally heaps stronger than most stuff like pine etc. which turns out heaps better in the long run.

The only palets you should ever use for north shore are Chep palets. They are the strongest and the bestest palets out.Other wise look through your local paper, people advertise about wanting to get rid of wood.Or go around the area looking for wood. But by all means don't use old crusty fence pailings or crappy non chep palets. You surely don't want some crap north shore after a few rides and weathering to fall apart.Oh and don't go and use big arse nails either.find ones that fit the thickness of what ever you're going to nail together,it's the safest way for good north shore or you can even bolt it together.

Just so many possibilities, just make sure it's strong.

Watch Porn.

Ride around and find houses which are being built/ renovated and quite often they have scrap wood in there skips or lieing around. Often enough they will say yeah sure have that but just make sure first.

yer i agree with funki. Call up building companies and ask for dirt or wood and they will send a truck over full of the stuff usually all for free. Most of the wood has already been treated and free of nails and other stuff and saves you from wasting all your money on wood.

Hey guys, First post on farkin!

I found when trying to source wood for my North shore trails the best place was either building sites where they are doing a complete Demolish/rebuild, Or at bunnings they have CHEAP structural timber, wich is quite strong, also this can be treated easier for prolonged protection!

Another great thing was pallets, as we used them for the pailings on our northshore. Make sure you get the thicker timber though as the timber quality is not as strong (generally speaking)

hope i could be of some help,

jb

The only thing with chep pallets is that they are ment to be returned to the place where they came from and apparently they get quiet shitty with people not returning there pallets (as what ive heard from builders and mates that have used them). So if you use them, cover up the name or paint over the whole thing so you cant tell its a chep pallet.

cheers kev

ill cut it up good any way. Out of the 2 pallets i used one was a chep it was heaps better than the other one

does anybody think the dump would be worth a go for buying cheap wood

t
04-06-2007, 05:54 PM
My mate works in recieving at bunnings, they sell pallets from overseas and damaged pallets for a few dollars each. they basically see them as scrap timber that need's to be got rid of.

You might get your ass kicked for using Chep pallets.

Ah c'mon it had to be said!; Try any landfill station/dump and go in and see what their rules are on taking things, you get a farkload of pines and all other types of woods there from old construction sites.

Rizey,
Welcome, 3 posts on Farkin and they are all shit.

Improve or piss off.

This is a valid thread about finding wood for legal trails.

Here's my take on wood.

What you boys are doing should hopefully be in your own back yard. Wood means ownership. They rot and fall apart. You can chuck a berm in and forget about it, but wood means ongoing maintance. Are you prepared to do that?

Don't put wood on existing trails. There are heaps of examples around OZ of trails that people rode that the council turned a blind eye to, but as soon as wood started to appear, they got all nervous and pulled the wood down AND SHUT DOWN THE WHOLE TRAIL. Putting wood on existing trails advance the conflict. Don't do it.

Don't use fallen logs, trees. Some greenie will claim that you knocked down that rare tree, even if it was already down. Also the fallen tree is part of the local ecosystem and that gets people pissed. You're better off using commercial wood (as mentioned previously).

Keep up the good suggestions boys. Rizey, pull your head in.

Pallets are by far your best option. If you were in Sydney I could give you a location where there are heaps of pallets sitting around, so I am sure the owners wouldn't mind if a few went missing. I would be wary of using chep pallets, because they are worth so much, and the blue is very noticeable.

However, the quality of the wood on the chep pallets is the best. The wood used on other branded pallets is inferior, but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. I am sure with a bit of visual inspection you would be able to get some decent wood. Just stay away from the pieces with knots in the middle.

I would stay away from building sites as people like Austral, Boral, C&M, Baines etc would be returning for their pallets. However if they have been sitting there for a while then the builder would be more than happy for them to be removed without it costing him anything, as he would have to remove them at any rate.

I would be a little careful going after pallets, but with some care it should be ok.

I hope this helps you somehow :)
