Can anyone enlighten me to what were good Shimano parts 10 years ago?
What were good brakes, wheels and hubs back then?
Cheers

I'm pretty sure the current higher end groupsets (105, ultegra, dura ace) existed 10 years ago. I bought a road bike in '98 or so with 105.

A quick search over a harris cyclery reveals lots of useful info: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/shimano.html

still have a few bits in the garage...not that they are much use these days...

I had mavic CXP 22s rims on the bike with 105 and some no name things on the beater roadie. Not sure what else was around.

Here's an excerpt from the harris cyclery page of the road groupset lineup in 1997 (for those that are interested, but don't want to browse the link):

1997 Shimano Road Group Heirarchy

1. Dura Ace
9-speed
2. Ultegra
3. 105SC
4. RX-100
5. RSX

I would give Armstrong one of my nuts for a complete NIB NOS Superbe Pro road and track set - I loved that group soooooo much.

Superbe Pro and its little brother, the Sprint groupset, were streets ahead of Shimano in the finishing stakes. The forgings were absolutely flawless, and in the Superbe gear was polished sooooo shiny. Wonderful stuff!

My pride and joy is a Reynolds 531 lugged road frame with a complete 1989 Mavic SSC groupset. Mavic hubs, cranks, shifters, derailleurs, headset - even Mavic branded bar, stem and brakes. It's 8 speed, and the indexing is as crisp and precise as anything you would ride today. Not bad for a 1989-90 groupset.

I rode it 50k's today and loved ever minute!

Just got a set of Superbe cranks for the fixie will polish them up if I get the time.

Does anyone know what Shimano "Exage" (or something) was?

Exage was nothing special. Sub-105, basically. Heavier materials, paint instead of polish etc. I'm sure I've got an exage front-mech in the toolbox somewhere...

Wasn't Exage in numbered groups - like Exage 300, 400, 500 etc ... had the biopace eliptical chainrings on the MTB set on my first (rigid) off-road bike.

Precursor to LX XT (DX) groups heirachy ...

While reminiscing about equipment past ... Don't suppose anybody remembers Shimano trying to change the standard chain pitch to 10mm, huh ?? Track groupsets used by some of the biggest stars of the day in the early eighties. NEVER seen a single skerrick of it on Ebay - ever.

Really? I saw a set go about 2 weeks ago, chain, cranks and rings. Of course now I can't find the link for them :(
