NEW POSTS START AT # 75
Well after about 17 years I've got the itch again.
I've always been a HUGE fan of the aerosols and we needed some art to hang in our new abode. So much to my girl's dissapointment, I decided to do it myself :D
As you can see I'm pretty damn rusty after almost 2 decades! Definately some can control issues, need to learn how to draw lines straight :o But I will also have you notice that there are NO DRIPS  Unfortunately I bought (yes, not racked) cheap paint. The (powder) blue wouldn't mix properly at first, so when I started it looked like a nice mid blue. But after a while it turned extremely light (due to having leached all the darker pigment out earlier) and ended up being lighter than the background  Also the red can had some serious nozzle issues. But all in all, I'm happy for my first attempt in almost 20 years ;)
First photo is the finished deal, where you can see the joins, there will be about a 15mm gap when hung giving it the "comic" effect. the second is my studio, the third and fourth are a couple of my mates that hang out with me whenever I'm in the back yard. Enjoy!
PS, if anyone has anymore art (paint, stencil, photo etc, feel free to post in this thread. If enough people do I'll change the title to invite all to post their stuff, like the stencil pic recently posted.

Clearly you've got WAY too much time on your hands! :D
But, good designs, look good enough for a professional (almost) :p
Seriously, that would look excellent in the right place.

Holidays finished today.....thank God!
Seriously, that would look excellent in the right place. What do you think the right place would be? I'm thinking on the side of the 8:15 Hornsby to Blacktown via Central! :p Jks..........I got in enough trouble for that as a kid :o

Johnny.. Johnny..
Cmon if you were that into graf, at least use decent paint, not that you didnt get a decent result anyways but still have cap choices for fills and high lights makes a huge difference, and the paint so much thicker and doesnt run.
Try these if thers a next time:
Montana(Blacks+Golds, Golds are a bit better then blacks)
Molotow Beltons
Krylon
Proline
IronLak(Aussie Brand good and heaps cheap $7 a can)
Nice result tho man, given me an idea for my bed room now :P

Mate, there are so many brands out these days that I've never heard of! I also dont have my old collection of caps anymore and the new techniques (they're probably old now, I stopped when I was 15 and am in my 30's now) are all new to me! And being that they've doubled in price I bought the cheapo's (I won't ever rack again and I'm embarrassed that I ever did) but will definately check out IronLak!
There will be a next time, but it will be bigger, better planned and on a wall (no, not one I'll get busted for). Can't wait to go back to uni so I can do some more designs. I still love the old skool bubbles, stars, shines and chromo look the best
.....and as NHD once said, you gotta love arrows!

Cheap paint sucks, but some colour are alright and they are all still good for fill. For caps for cheap paint check out www.dahub.com.au.
Other wise Ironlak is nice, flow is a little slow and some colour are not great.
Anyone in Adelaide there is exhibition in forestone with some of the best writers in Australia I will post some photos later. Check out www.forestone.com.au

I don't wouch squirts for anything apart from minor highlights because they plain suck. Dulux fiddly bits are alright but steer well clear or oranges/yellows.

HAHAHAHA
They are shit the only colours that are any good, black, purple(fades), pink, blue. Avoid yellow, red and white as they are shit.
The only advantage of exports is you can make an adaptor cap (male to female) out of the standard cap this way you can use any decent cap ,outliners, ny caps or whatever. All you need is a punch/drill to put a hole in the top of the normal export cap and lighter to seal the original hole. Now you can use the hole in the top for any male cap.

Stencils eh...
My group of friends organised a trip to Byron Bay for Splendour in the Grass, and the idea was put forward that we make shirts to wear as a group. Fear and loathing in Byron Bay was the theme, and since I'm the most handy and creative, I was assigned the job of going about the shirts.
So... from knowing nothing about printing, I had to do everything, and have it done in 2 weeks. A week of researching every night crammed the info in my head (stencilrevolution.com was my saviour), then I went shopping for supplies.
I then spent more than 30 hours in one week designing stencils, printing outlines, cutting them, testing, modifying etc, and it all culminated in two 4 hour sessions of printing different designs on 15 shirts. I "cheated" a bit by using iron-on transfers for the text and the photo image, but the rest are all my own work.
Every shirt had the same front print, the blue text + face print. The rear vary, 4 different designs.
Check it out below, a bit messy due to rushing, but I'm pretty impressed with the results for it was my first ever attempt at stencilling and screen printing.
To give you an idea of how I went about things, I took a screenshot from the scene I wanted to use, threw it in irfanview, edited the colour and contrast until I got close to the black+white necessary for stencilling, then I went around in mspaint smoothing it all out to the final image I wanted. This was then pumped through the "outline" tool in irfanview, printed out on to paper, glued on to my acetate (stencil material) with spray temporary adhesive, and cut with a scalpel.
I preferred using a roller and paint straight on to the shirt through the stencil, but a screen was necessary to keep some of the detail steady when painting. The stripes in the red image are a good example of the detail that needed to be held in place when rolling. Next time, I'll use a much thinner acetate, and I'll squeegee it through the screen, but because this time the acetate was very thick, things got messy with the screen and squeegee (paint bled through the stencil edges because it was loaded on so thick) so straight roller was the best solution.
Oh well, lessons learnt, I don't want to touch stencils or printing again for another few months, but once I get over the intense amount of effort exerted the past few weeks, I'm sure I'll get right in to printing my own shirts, and can't wait to use it as an outlet of creativity.
Have a look at the pics:
#1 All the shirts layed out, finally complete. These are the rear of the shirts
#2 Rear print 1, my favourite image and quote
#3 RP2, well, it's an iron on, that image was demanded by the others so I submitted, there was no way I could be bothered making a stencil of it
#4 RP3, a bit cheesy, but yet again, done by demand
#5 RP4 , quote is out of context a bit, but a cool image nonetheless
#6 Front print on all the shirts. Image looks cool (first stencil ever cut by me too), the text is a bit borked, but that was rushed. I might go back and do a bit more detail on the sunglasses and use that stencil again for other purposes.
#7 The steps to make a stencil... take the image and manipulate it until a good constrast is found, then labour with mspaint smoothing the shapes until a suitable/desireable image is created.
#8 The above image is then hit with the outline tool, to make printing quicker and cutting easier. It's glued on to the acetate, and away I cut with a scalpel.
Give me a few months for the blisters to subside (damn hard scalpel), and we'll see what else I'll come up with. This stuff sure is fun :)

"Buy the ticket take the ride" is my fav.

Ahh yeh, I think I could do you one without the FALIBB text. I still have blank shirts, stencils and paints lying around.
There's some amazing artwork on stencilrevolution, it's really inspiring to see the pieces.

Stencils eh...
Nice work Rik!
However to make the t-shirt printing a bit easier and less time consuming you should probably get a couple silk screens. I tried the stencil method before as well but found that it was messy, inaccurate (relatively speaking) and time consuming. With the print actually part of the screen the image will turn out a whole lot crisper without the bleeding that stencils can cause.
But i must say that you have done some good work there with what you had!! :) Hopefully your friends appreciate the effort that was involved (believe me, i understand!!!!) and hopefully your heat setting was sufficient.
Nothing worse than hours of work down the drain after the t's first wash.
Cheers.

Some Sydney street artists have finally realised that there is a legal wall/allyway at Sydney uni. There are full pieces going up every weekend. Some are a bit toy but some incorporate heaps of good stencil work. Not just as characters and stuff but as actual centre pieces of the fill ins and background. You can tell that some more time was able to be invested. Unfortunately you get postes and other paintings over the top pretty quick, so you've got to be there early monday morning to get the best shots........I don't go to uni on mondays.

Here is my bedroom from '92. It was cool living in there. Ran out of paint before we got the poor girl's face done.
Remember this was back in the day when you couldn't buy caps for different flows. Paper under the caps all the way!
That room is still in the same condition. Dad wanted to paint over it and make it all "nice" but Mum wouldn't let him. I think she is an old-school hip hopper at heart.
Who remembers Tucsan? The smell of that paint still make me wet.
Posted in another thread, a shirt stencil I printed the other day:
http://forums.farkin.net/photo/data/500/killdjprint.jpg
I'll do another 2-3 single colour prints that I have planned, then think about stepping up to multiple layers. The bug has bitten, so now I just have to decide if it's worth investing in a UV setup.

Some really good stuff in here. Some of the stuff from overseas is amazing. This is something I did a few years ago. Not really graf but.. meh
2 biking stencils I did a few months ago... it's almost time to cut and print, but I'm left wondering how to make the "islands" within the wheels work. Any suggestions?
A few options I've considered: Cropping the wheels a bit, but that'd look wonky. Another is to have "slits" that divide the wheels in to quarters, or I could add a berm or other trail feature to the pic but again that'd be wonky.
Hmmm

15 minute job to express my dislike of current affairs. To be done with red, worn on a shirt whereever and whenever I damn feel like.
Yes, there's a need to cut out the border, I'll do that with a ruler when it's printed... most likely make cuts on the end of each radius and divide the lengths in to thirds.
Meh, nothing fancy, hardly artistic really, but it'll be another shirt to add to the building collection.

Rik, your going to have some flimsy-assed stencils with thoes bridges for the wheels. Suggestion: make big bridges and hit them individually with the ink or can afterwards. Doesnt turn out too bad.
I think you need to do something with thoes wheels. They seem to stand out as being 'not right'. Other than that minor technicality, nice work.
I'm left wondering how to make the "islands" within the wheels work. Any suggestions?
If you glue the stensil to flyscreen you can make as many islands as you want, this also solves any problems with flimsy parts of the stensil not staying in place.

Rik, your going to have some flimsy-assed stencils with thoes bridges for the wheelsUhhh yeh!, hence why I asked the question about them ;) The wheels look a bit borked 'cause they were done "freehand" in Paintbrush, but I know I can do a smooth scalpel cut with better perspective so they'll be fixed then.
I'll probably make a 2nd stencil just for the wheels (duh, so simple, should've thought of it before), any aftertouching without a stencil will make a mess of a shirt print.I want one!Reply to my PM I sent the other day and we'll work something out

I thought the one on Banksy's site of the pissed angel slumped in the archway was gold.

Got to hand it to Banksy what a great idea.

Paris Hilton targeted in CD prank
Paris Hilton's album entered the UK chart at number 29 last week
Hundreds of Paris Hilton albums have been tampered with in the latest stunt by "guerrilla artist" Banksy.
Banksy has replaced Hilton's CD with his own remixes and given them titles such as Why am I Famous?, What Have I Done? and What Am I For?
He has also changed pictures of her on the CD sleeve to show the US socialite topless and with a dog's head.
A spokeswoman for Banksy said he had doctored 500 copies of her debut album Paris in 48 record shops across the UK.
She told the BBC News website: "He switched the CDs in store, so he took the old ones out and put his version in."
It might be that there will be some people who agree with his views on the Paris Hilton album
HMV spokesman
But he left the original barcode so people could buy the CD without realising it had been interfered with.
Banksy is notorious for his secretive and subversive stunts such as sneaking doctored versions of classic paintings into major art galleries.
His spokeswoman said he had tampered with the CDs in branches of HMV and Virgin as well as independent record stores.
He visited cities including Bristol, Brighton, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and London, she added.
A spokesman for HMV said the chain had recovered seven CDs from two Brighton shops but was unaware that other locations were affected.
Artistic leeway
No customers had complained or returned a doctored version, he said.
"It's not the type of behaviour you'd want to see happening very often," he said.
"I guess you can give an individual such as Banksy a little bit of leeway for his own particular brand of artistic engagement.
"Often people might have a view on something but feel they can't always express it, but it's down to the likes of Banksy to say often what people think about things.
"And it might be that there will be some people who agree with his views on the Paris Hilton album."
A spokesman for Virgin Megastores said staff were searching for affected CDs but it was proving hard to find them all.
"I have to take my hat off - it's a very good stunt," he added.

Gravedig:
Well apparently I've seen the works of Banksy in person and not even known it. I saw a link to some of his work and though one of the pictures looked familiar.
I took this photo in London, 2003, outside the Tate Modern Art Museum (fitting location):

It's actually a bird. You can see it's beak on the right hand side of the eye. As for the other stuff, yeah, War of the Worlds shit!! freaky stuff huh!
Unbelievable piece of work. So glad I found that. I was in Rio for Carnivale and just got up early one morning and went walking and came across it.
Whilst I really like and appreciate the artistic merit in the above works, my tastes are in the more random/retarded pieces - scrawled oneliners, dumb pictures and silly jokes.

That first one is deadset awesome. I love stuff like that, like Bansky's work, like the tiled stuff I've posted, like the spray can work that isn't exactly hip hop, but is just a bizzare picture of some sort. Some that stuff earlier on in the thread that I found in Estonia, etc. is pretty much what I'm talking about. The stencils, that voodoo doll etc. Love it!

Im going to chime in and help him show you what real graff is, because abstract graffiti as you see it, is only merely street art, they are barely similar, with the exception of stencils.

i'll try post pics fo my major work later and another mates which ended up being pretty cool but on the other hand if any of you guys have heard of the artist "neckface" hes recently visited sydney by the looks of it around surry hills and certain alleys, i recomend viewing, very good stuff.

I made some shit stenciled shirts at the end of yr10. I used an NMD stencil which came with my new board and some shit normal metalic spray paint.
I thought it was balla.
Had some fun yesterday doing some work for my mate drainbamage (http://myspace.com/drainbamaging)...
His dB head on everything:

Shameless Irontwist promotion, the bbq aprons:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o42/Bitsmasher/Stencils/vote1.jpg
And finally, I've succumbed to selling out... hoping this design gets some attention and allows me to offload a few for $$$. It'll be popular with the "oh ma gaaawwwddd fluoro is like so random" crowd.

West Bank residents take brush to murals
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/west-bank-residents-take-brush-to-murals/2007/12/21/1198175342110.html
BETHLEHEM: Offended West Bank residents have painted over a satirical mural by the graffiti artist Banksy that was meant to highlight their plight.
The elusive British street artist painted six images around the town revered as the birthplace of Jesus to help drum up pre-Christmas tourism and to illustrate the hardships Palestinians face in the occupied West Bank.
But the irony behind a painting of an Israeli soldier checking a donkey's identity papers - a jab at Israel's strict security - was lost on some locals, who found it offensive and painted over it.
"We're humans here, not donkeys. This is insulting. I'm glad it was painted over," said Nasri Canavati, a restaurant owner.
FFS, do they even know that there are other religions than their own? The Middle East obviously has uneducated rednecks too.

Ok I realise this is a bit of a gravedig, but I didn't know where else to post this.
Some Melbournians may recall a lego crate man near fed square, as well as some in the Eastern suburbs. They were all removed so I could never get pics:( Now guess what??? There is one in Newport!!! Its on the abandoned mill, I saw it yesterday from the train, I am struggling to comprehend how someone would do this. Heres pics...

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t312/tho072007/millclose.jpg
So finally I have something cool to look at from the train:) And yes I was an extreme rebel and climbed up to take a look, the closer you get to it, the more difficult it seems. You have to climb like 4 ladders to get onto the brown roof, then the big silver box thing is on another roof that I couldn't even get to! And I counted...its 20+ milkcrates! Props to whoever did this, carrying 21 milkcrates up 4 ladders then onto a slippery roof then onto some weird silver box thingo would not be easy:eek:
Post up some more stuff like this, I like it better than conventional graffiti, and I think it kinda fits under the same category?

i was reading a grafitti brazil book last year in art and there was some really good ones in there all diferent sorts there were two styles that i liked my favourite one was called "nunca" its of big tribal faces, And one that i cant remember the name of but its sort of like a water pattern along the ground and into sewers and out of drains and things really cool i reckon.
i would love to learn to do it but i dont think im artistic enough ive had a couple of attempts on canvas just with a brush it didnt turn out to bad.

Anyway, yeah the pics look good, I cant tell if you were using caps etc. in those but if not you should look at them too. Theres even caps that draw stars for you =) Or you could just do it the ghetto way with a Pink Dot etc =)

"Inspector Eddie Bosch said the group had been drinking alcohol and spraying graffiti inside the drain last night when they heard the sound of rushing water.
"They spent about half an hour doing the artwork, not that far from the entrance," he said. "Then they've heard a noise and suddenly the water is upon them and they've washed all the way to Lurline Bay."
They smashed into steel bars at the end of the drain but the 27-year-old slipped through. "He's just got a little scratch on his hip," Inspector Bosch said."

that aint no stencil,
thats a beautiful thing named a cutback,
bassicly you put a patch of color down and the cut back over the top with another colour till you end up with a nice shape with sharp corners.
plus this aint done with your standard paint caps there is a whole range of cpas pressures and paints that do many different things, but thats all useless with out a good eye and good control of paint.

Found a place where I can paint away with impunity.
Was only able to buy three cans, had no designs and the paint/caps here are absolutely WOEFUL! But I had fun and I think I'll be doing a bit more in the near future. I'm starting to move away from the traditional hip hop style and just starting to paint. I might get some paint together and do a nice big old school piece with bubbles and arrows and stuff though. First one was on a metal thingy that already had a whole pile scrawl all over it so I tried to make something out of it. Not good but not overly embarrassing either. Second one was ok, the eye came out ok but the bubbles are as toy as fark, shouldn't not have done them at all. The last one was a lark to waste paint.

The eye is really cool Johnny, maybe try it with a bit more detail some time, has a lot of potential.
Also if you can only get cheapo cans with the female caps, just replace them with substitutes from normal household products;) You will find female caps with a nice round nozzle and circular top (way more comfy than the little square stick eg Aussie Export) on stuff like baking spray, foamy spray crap etc... They work really well. I even use em to paint my bikes if Im using Aussie Export!

Mate, it's a Catholic thing. I've always wondered too but have never really researched it. The most original looking place I've seen it is in Catholic icons where Mary is holding an infant Jesus and this flaming heart is floating on her chest.
I love the whole Mexican/Latino style tattoo art and that's really my inspiration for drawing it. I have done heaps of different types of sketches involving it; wings, chains, horns, barbed wire, etc. I love the image!

The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity.
This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and also by Anglo-Catholics. It also stresses the central Christian concept of loving and adoring Jesus. The origin of this devotion in its modern form is derived from a French Catholic nun Marguerite Marie Alacoque, who said she learned the devotion from Jesus in visions. Predecessors to the modern devotion existed to some extent in the Middle Ages in various mystical sects.[1]
Devotion to the Sacred Heart may sometimes be seen in the Eastern Catholic Churches, where it remains a point of controversy and is seen as an example of liturgical latinisation.
The Sacred Heart is often depicted in Christian art as a flaming heart shining with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, surrounded by a crown of thorns, and bleeding. Sometimes the image is over Jesus' body with his wounded hands pointing at the heart. The wounds and crown of thorns allude to the manner of Jesus' death, while the fire represents the transformative power of love.
The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a holy day in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, and is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost. As Pentecost is always celebrated on Sunday, the Feast of the Sacred Heart always falls on a Friday. In 2008, it will be celebrated on May 30.

Unfortunately I didnt use an oil based marker on Stewie so he smudged. I really like the tubby one I made, has some potential but I just coloured it with pencil:p I should use paint next time. At least my paste worked well.

Barely noticeable mate, mainly because they are not communist anymore. The only legacy of a communist system is that they have a one party government with no centralised election process. They are authoritarian, in other-words, quite strong on rules and being the boss. This means stuff like Wiki, BBC and most porn is banned and a lot of different stuff isn't reported in the news paper. But if I was just a normal businessman or worker etc. I wouldn't even notice this stuff. But I'm here for politics so I do. other than that, it's a normal (developing country) place where you go out, work, party, smoke, listen to music, ride bikes etc. It's slowly becoming like any normal country.

Saw one last week, thought it was utter crap:p But seemed like an interesting concept. If it was a big picture or something it could have potential, but the one I saw was just three letters and an exclimation mark. Pretty lame.

I thought this would be the most appropriate thread to put this in. It's a sign for one of the suburbs in Albury called 'Norris Park'. It constantly sees this sort of artwork, but never to this standard, so I thought I'd better grab a picture before council peeled it off tomorrow when they go back to work.

Hilarious, but it must be embarrassing to fail that at grammar - publicly...
True, but the fact the council pretty much has a dedicated team to removing Chuck Norris jokes from the sign is worth being humiliated for. I think whoever did it got confused when it came to the question: Should it be ...Chuckin' or ...Chuckin'"?

pretty much... at school in my teaches office (mad keen stencil artist with long history of vandilism**dont know how he got the job**) we have an article that writes a man sprayed over one of banksy famous rats... banksy sued him for damage to property and vandalism on an artwork... some of his peice on canvas are worth upward of ten grand and way higher... really cool artist inspiration from when i did stencils
I love the "I do stencils" line as a way of giving your opinion credit.
His work might be relatively simple and given a bucketload of attention of late but if you think about what he's done and consider how he managed to do it, you'd be dumb or ignorant to not give the man the respect he deserves.

I'm not saying banksy hasn't done amazing things and I know he has pushed the envelope in things like that but there is just way to much hype asociated with him IMO. I'm also not saying that i don't like his works as he has been a major inspiration.

This was about to be my exact response, although Ill post a few pics:p No doubt Banksy is a pioneer in many ways, not because he got famous or rich (which he didn't really, Unicycler is right in that he made no money at all off the imitation crap that got auctioned)
For me personally, I couldn't really care about him going to an art gallery, or even the Ghaza strip, its his art that I really love, he doesn't just do great stencils, he works with the natural landscape and his stuff often stands out from similar artists.
Although its kinda unsettling that some of his stuff gets crazy amounts of acclaim just because its 'banksy', as if no matter what the piece, him doing it adds so much merit? I scoff at this article....
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23557773-2862,00.html

I was woundering what do u cut good quality stencils out of?

For small ones you can print it out on paper tape it too the card/acetate etc then cut it out. For bigger ones you can print it on overhead and then project it onto a big bit of card etc then draw it on and cut or you can print it over multiple pages like a banner and sticky tape it all together and cut.
Print an outline on to paper, use a light amount of spray adhesive to temporarily stick it to acetate (thin plastic. overhead transparencies work well). Collating multiple pages for big images isn't too hard either, though it's best to incorporate some sort of alignment device in the image to ensure everything comes together properly. By that I mean just have a grid of lines underneath your outline and line up the ends of all those lines when you cut the border off the paper.
