Hey Guys

Now first of all I have searched for a thread like this, and didn't really find anything that was of help, or really answered my questions, but oh well, now I am sure I will get some answers.

Alright, I have been looking at getting some Knee/Shin Guards, but I am little confused. I have been looking at many Down Hill race photo's and well it has left me pondering, what should I buy. I have seen many people just wearing the knee guards and then the next person has the full Knee/Shin guard. I am really not sure what is better and why people only wear the knee one.

My main intended use for these will be DJ, FR and DH. I am thinking the full Knee/Shin guards would be better suited, but I still don't know why people just wear the knee ones.

Well as you can see I am going with the brand 661, and I have narrowed my selection down to 3 options...

661 Race Lite Knee/Shin Guard

661 Race Knee/Shin Guard

Now with the 661 Race guards are the calve straps attached with Velcro, e.g. do you unstrap them and then strap them once they are on, or are they slip on ones, where the straps are more like elastic?

Because if that is the cause I can put a big red cross next to it, because I am only a slender person, but no need to worry, my legs will fit into the small sized knee/shin guards.

So yes, well there is one question, but the main one is, which one? I am leaning towards the 661 Race Lite Knee/Shin Guard because they are adjustable with the Velcro and if they are too small I can put some more Velcro on the shin guard, and they look a little more vented and well they just look a lot better than the races. But hey, I have no experience with Knee/Shin guards, so I probably don't know which one is the best.

Well if you can help I will be very great full.

Thank You :D

Nick

Hey mate, Id recommend the Kyle Straight ones as I own a pair and the have saved my knees a fair few times without fail.

i dont have any experience with the other options but can say the Kyle Straight ones are comfortable, do the job, and arent to heavy. :)

Well maybe we should forget about the Kyle Strait ones, because they were just more or less an example. The only reason I say that is, because I have enough ugly looking scars on my legs to last me a life time, so I really don't need anymore, so maybe we will cut this down to just the two Knee/Shin guards.

Thanks anyways, I will probably end up getting a pair anyway. :D

I have a pair of Mace Tectonics. I am just using these as an example of full length knee/shins. I have found these have saved me hundreds of times, before i had them, i cut my shins really badly with my pedals one unlucky time, and its never happened again thanks to full length shinnies. They're also elastic strapped which is great, means you don't have to take your shoes off to get them on/off.

So in conclusion I'm recommending the full length knee/shins over just straight knee protection. Hope this helped a bit.

Yeah I am pretty sure now I will go for the full length knee/shin protection, but I am not sure which one is better?

The 661 Race Lite Knee/Shin

or

The 661 Race Knee/Shin

I know many of you voted for the Race, but do the Races have elastic straps on them? Because they might not fit then.

Thanks

The 661 Race Lite version tends to slip down very easily so that when you crash, it's nowhere to be seein as your knee hits a rock.

The 661 Race version looks a bit better as it has more allround support, thus clinging to your leg better.

The Kyle Strait is the way to go for knee protection. Doesn't move, is comfortable, and is durable. If you are looking for knee protection as well you could run the Kyle knee pads with some lighter shin guards as well (whatever the model is called)...

I have run the Race/Knee Shin guards for 2 years & they are bloody terrific shinnies. They are comfortable & if you get the correct size they will not slide down your legs but if you have any touble with them doing it you can buy some 661 Padlocks to go over them to stop it happening.
Although they have seen better days, the plastic on them is chopped up pretty bad but thats what it is there for & its better than my shins being cut up.
I'd highly reccommend them for Downhill pacificly but I also want to buy some of the Kyle Straight ones for the warmer days on the less rougher tracks & a bit of general riding here & there. Hope that helps. Let us know what you get & how you like them.

Cool, well it looks like I am getting a pair of 661 Race Knee/Shin guards. Thanks heaps for the help guys.

If I find that they are a little too small, I will certainly take up that padlock thing and also if there isn't enough knee protection I will invest in a pair of the Kyle Strait Knee Pads. :D

I got some Kyle Strait Knee Guards about a month ago and they are really great, they fit well don't move, lots if padding but slim enough to fit under long pants (great for winter) I would not recommend them if you runs flats and constantly run your pedal into your shins, but that would be the only down sude to them. I prefer knee pads over shins you just seem to be a lot less restricted.

I have enough shin ding scars on my shin, so anymore and I would have scars on skin. :D

Well I probably will end up getting a set of the 661 Race Knee/Shin guards and the 661 Kyle Strait Knee Pad.

Thanks guys. :D
