View Full Version : Heavy Metal: 6/03 update hubs + rims + cranks + others
So... I'm looking for my perfect bike, decided I'd like a dually as I haven't ridden one for years and wanna see what the hype is all about. That led me to research for many months until I committed to the FRM, and the deal I got on it was enough incentive to purchase it.
Then, I sold my hardtails and realised I now don't have anything appropriate for urban use, and since I'm now working and TAFE'ing 6 days a week, all my riding is going to be done in the CBD. What to do? get a bike that suits that environment.. so I impulsed and ordered a 243.
Both bikes are going to be project bikes, now I have a commuter to get me around on, and not much free time right now, I'm in no rush to build them up. So now I have 2 shweet frames and nothing to put on them
here's a pic:
http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=4681
The FRM weighs 4.5kg and puts out 6.5" of travel. The 243 comes in at 4kg's, and has zero travel, but immense strength.
These two bikes are going to be so much fun once they're going.
I've got alot to decide with the buildups, I know the 243 will definately be SS, probably run a Hadley or King rear hub, oldschool MrT's or rigid forks, BMX cromo cranks, and a generally beefy buildup, something that'll endure alot of punishing riding.
The FRM will hopefully be a practical, do-everything bike, I want to run as much Aireal parts as possible, SRAM driveline, probably SPV front and rear for tunability, and I'll try to keep the weight reasonable without compomising strength too much.
Anyway, 2 fantastic bikes, not enough time to build them, let alone ride them. Oh well, they're lying on the lounge next to my bed, so at least I can hug them in my sleep.
UPDATE 21/02: I've decided on forks, click here for link to post below (http://www.farkin.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=151573#151573)
UPDATE 6/03: Bought a shitload of Aireal+Liquid parts, plus have rims and rear derailleur ready to go (http://www.farkin.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=159943#159943)

Well atleast you could use the .243 for an anchor if you ever go fishing...
Update 21/02: Forks
So... I've sourced the forks I'll be running initially:

http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=4855
We have...
2002 Super T, 7" of loving. Bought 2nd hand through these forums.
1998 Mr T, 4" of single crown 20mm goodness, bought brand new a few months ago, I'm so happy with this find.
and CroMo Vario trials forks
The FRM will see the SuperT's the most, and maybe get the Mr's for enduro-type work. The .243 will run all 3 forks depending on my mood, I can't wait to get it going with the Supers, but even with the Mr's it'll be good for big stuff, and throwing the rigids on will teach me to ride with some amount of style (we can't have that, can we?!).
So now we have frame and forks, and the anticipation is killing me...

pretty.

Those are my old forks, came with the ziptie and left with the ziptie, and the seals have been fine the whole time... and they're at least a year old.
I'll 2nd that... The only time I can see the ziptie being an issue is either when it's too tight, or when the fork seals are bottoming on the crown.

meh, stuffed my seals but i guess the cable tie was on damn tight
Righto, just threw a whole shitload of money at some parts...
The 9.0SL I've had for a while, it was on my XC speedmachine, the rims I bought 2nd hand and I have to say they were one of the worst impulse buys I've made... but I don't want to go in to that.
Aireal+ Liquid bits, 'cause, well, they're damn nice, and Aussie made too!
Here is how things are shaping up, the FRM getting the most attention so far, but note the shmick orange hub in the Mr T's, for the .243
http://www.farkin.net/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=5242
Note the spare linkages, Gutty's much-lusted for plates. These will be installed when (if?!) I get a new shock, to bump out the travel and make this even more of a weapon of a bike.
Not long to go now, but it's still going to be slow and painful getting the rest together.
I'm yet to decide on a rear hub for the .243, I was dead keen on a Hadley SS yet still waiting weeks later for them to arrive. I might just get an orange Aireal 9spd hub and space it out to singlespeed, it'll be more versatile, hopefully strong enough (12mm axle, oh yeh), and will look pimp with orange forks and front hub 8)
Oh, and my bank account is hating this, I'm almost flat broke now :x But, hopefully it'll be worth it!

Rik spray the superT lowers and crowns white!
Ummm, painting a fork, maybe :?: And how about custom blue stickers too ;) Dunno if I'll bother with the crowns, but the lowers definately. (http://www.farkin.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10983)

Hey, at least the color matches the frame....
EDIT: Damnit, I swear Gus's post wasn't there when I wrote that...
Another pic... the 243 is making progress
I have an Aireal front hub on the Mr T, my custom DXT rear hub. Odyssey 41thermal cranks, Cilenski pedals, Battlegear sprocket. Chain is a KMX INOX stainless steel, which are a bloody steal at less than $30. Pazzaz steel seatpost, only because I kill them regularly, and DiamondBack seat with 9mm cromo rails, yet again because I kill rails. That's a DMR wingbar, I'll cut it down though.
On my "to buy" list, Gold Aireal rear hub, maybe matching stem. FSA pig headset, in red. Avid V brakes and levers, dunno what rims to run though. And red grips too... it'll look sexy when it's complete.

please dont get a red headset, you know damn well it will end up pink :P
Dude, if you want pink, you should see the "red" cable ends I bought this week... so much for ano red, bring on the bright pink
And yeh, I intend on running dual 24", but that'll be a hassle to set up, although it'll be worth it.

holy crap :|
Rik, it needs pimpin' atomlab rims (OMG!). And a rear hub the same colour (they have to match).
Its looking awesome....
As for the FRM, it better not be better than mine, for they look like a pretty simmilar spec! colour scheme is awesome! imagine the white supers! (OMG!)
heres a pic of mine just to get you set...

it now has 8inch XTs and is cleaner and that grey sticker is now gone!
ride hard
Been a while since I posted...
Anyway, the .243 got chucked together a few weeks ago using parts I stole off other bikes... brakes off my brothers commuter, and wheels off my commuter.
Test riding it, unfortunately she's too large for me, waayy too long for a street bike, so I've decided to sell it on. Plus I had major issues with the fork topcaps not clearing the downtube, so one or the other had to go, and it was the frame.
Anyway, here's the bike as built up, obviously the chain doesn't just dangle like it does in the pic.

Aaannnddd, I completed the FRM only today, here it is in it's full glory:

Heh yeh, they're first to go, that seat is fucken nasty... but it was all I had in my garage last night. I'll dig up something better at work tomorrow for sure, something that'll be comfortable for allday riding yet still offer control.

Oh yeh, they're installed now, didn't take a pic with them, I was intending to compare the angles, but forgot. Whoops.

Pity you had to go to all the effort of building up the .243 just to sell it but i guess if it ain't right, there's nothing else for it.
the frm looks umm... bright i guess, i agree with the junking the seat and grips, but i suggest getting a pair of oury hard compounds in black.
should be a fun ride, shame to get it all dirty really :)
