We've got a set of trails that we've been building on and off for almost two years now. More recently, in the past 6 months we've been down there more than usual, and thanks to the rain, it really takes a toll on the jumps, as the soil is softer than usual.

I'm just wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of putting tarps over the jumps. A reason I can think of to NOT put them on is the build up of moisture under the tarp? Or the complete opposite; dry them out.

Any help, and expirience is appreciated.

my sons use carpet that they find at the local tip

they find it helps to hold up ramps and down ramps together as well as stopping erosion.

Yeah we do have carpet scraps on the peaks of the downramps. But I'm talking about just covering up the jumps when we're not there with tarp...

This has also happened to my trails which have shrunk to about half the size after the recent rain and we are also contemplating putting carpets. They are a great way to slow down or maybe even stop the erosion as they soak up all the moisture as well as gradually release it into the dirt which is perfect.

Hope this helps,

Greg

P.S. Once we rebuild our jumps to their original size we ARE going to put carpets on and also fix our drainage :p

I have used a heshin bag on the top of one of my jumps and it has not shrunk, the jump that is, even when Brisbane had that torrential down pour of rain a couple of weeks ago.

So really all you have to do is put it on top of the jump, but you could lay the bags all over the jump if you like. :D

carpet works really well... the longer rolls you have the the better try to run a full length top to bottom this way when it rains you only have to resurface the bottom of your tranny's.

only thing that sucks is you get crazy carpet burns when you stack,
the ones that weep clear shit for days....

We tarp our jumps when lots of rain is forcast and when weve got really wet clay on them(when rains coming also) and it works a treat. Seems that the wind get under then and hardens the shit out of em, and of course they dont get eroded.

Go for it, its done our our world of good.

I just put wooden planks over my jumps, it's not perfect but it's better than nothing. Carpet does work well though, I know of these jumps with carpet on them and they've been their for ages in perfect condish.

Yeah we only put tarps on when rain is forcast. It really only helps to stop the rain from ruining them. No other purpose really.
