use a file on the edges that poke out for maximum damage
sounds like a bogan way of doing things.....

Hey jack build more star picket jumps and make them bigger and try digging more pits and make the down ramps bigger and steeper.:D

Behind all the sarcasm I think you'll find that the general gist is that star pickets are a really bad idea.
Don't do it, it's dangerous.
I went to school with a guy who tripped over onto a star picket and punctured his stomach. That was bad, I hate to think what stacking a bike and landing on one would be like.
Don't.

At the school down the road, a kid was using a star pick (or was it a javelin) at a goal post. Long story short, it slipped over, he ran into it, it punctured the artery in his leg and he died on scene before the ambulance could get there. So not a good idea. Besides that, very inventive.

Or you could get like 30 of them and drive them into the ground at like a 40 degree angle right next to each other, and hey presto you got a jump!!!
seriously though if you do use them, have them really well covered (maybe 4" of dirt) so you don't end up impaling yourself

put in the extra hard yards and just use dirt, i find it gives you the most satisfaction and you get some very nice clean smooth looking/riding jumps.

Slightly related:
For building a dirt kicker, I've thought about sandbagging the dimensions and then just filling it in with dirt - anyone tried this?
But of course I need something to hold the sandbags in, ie star pickets or just wooden stakes. Of course the pickets would be barely, if at all exposed. Anyone tried this?

using star pickets is just plain stupid
those things are dangerous enough as it is without jumping a bike near them
and despite the obvious danger using things like star pickets in jumps will weaken them, like has already been said, put in a bit more work and build it out of pure dirt, for longer lasting, much nicer and a hell of a lot less dangerous jumps

I second this question.... wtf are they?
For those wondering, these are star pickets: http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/11351114/Y_Steel_Post_Star_Picket.html
So basically hardened steel sharpened to a point used for fencing and holding trees up, stuff like that.
As for using them for jumps its not the worst idea ive ever heard but its not far from it. In short dont use them for jumps its just asking to get impaled.

Hammer two pickets into the ground, get heavy gauge fencing wire and use it to lash a builders pallet between the pickets.
Best case: Works well until pallet one day gives way and falls down exposing top foot or so of pickets
Worst case: Some numb nuts decide that they can't be arsed to hammer picket all the way into the ground but instead just tie the pallet on lower down, thereby leaving a foot or so of picket exposed from the outset.

You could use sharpened bits of wood instead of pickets that could work.:D

Ok so you dont like pickets.I have one picket jump on my DH track for about 3 year now and it is still going strong. Two pickets in the front and two pickets in the middle with a wooden ramp [made from hardwood] and it still going strong.

Ohh, well now I know what they are, I have built a jump like that, but I used wooden stakes.
I have found it is effective for more efficient use of dirt, but as soon as you start to jump with them, most of the dirt will fall back through the back, if you are using logs.
I mean it is good and all, but I think you would better to just build your normal jumps with the dirt going over both sides, much safer. :D

No-one said they don't like em, they make it heaps simple to build a jump. It's just that they're farking dangerous.
Sensible trail design is about making things sustainable and safe. Safe doesn't mean non challenging, it just means not needlessly incorporating deathtraps into your trail design and making sure that if things go wrong, the consequences won't kill people.
Star pickets are not compliant with the term "safe". Yes, you've gotten away with it, but it's still not something I'd ever consider recommending.

If you do use star pickets (which is not the best idea) make sure you do everything possible to minimalise danger. do not have them protruding (sp?) the ground. if possible wrap in foam. It will be better to spend a week digging more dirt then to end up haveing to be fed with a tube because you ripped open your stomach

star picket jumps are when you support the kicker with the pickets hammered into the ground.

Never had a problem with it. It doesn't move at all when ridden off, kicked, etc. I don't think these are dangerous if they're done properly, but I certainly wouldn't want to ride a dodgy one.
