You pay gst 10% and an import tax of 5%normally you will receive a phone call from the shipper UPS /DHL/FEDEX and they will ask you to pay before they release the item.
I cannot remmember on what the taxs are apliccable to but i dont think it includes shipping.

In theory, you have to pay. In practice, tick the "yes I'm bringing in stuff valued over $1,000" box, and smile at the customs chick. They typically can't be bothered with the paperwork, I reckon.

i think that you only have to pay tax on a personally imported item if it is over about $1000 in value, so anything above that is going to have GST.

Correct, anything including commercial shippents that are under 1000 AUD (including shipping) are not subject to duties or taxes.

if it is over $1,000 you have to pay the duties on the whole amount, not just the value over $1,000.

Are you sure? I think you still have to pay gst for amounts under 1000, but no customs/import tax...if its over 1000 you will have to pay an import tax (as well as GST), that varies in scale depending on whether there is local industry here or not (bikes are therefore unlikely to attract import tax)

It's virtually impossible to get a Santa Cruz shipped out to Australia. If your brother in law can bring it back for you then you have no problems. He only has to declare it if he comes back into Australia with more than $900 AUD worth of goods per person travelling.

He has the option of claiming the bike is a cheapie but with the way they scan and check everything these days that may be a bit risky. I can across a customs guy a few weeks back who knew mountain bikes. Eyebrows were raised but I didnt need to pull out my invoice for my new forks.

At most you may be up for 10 % GST and possibly 5% import duty on the purchase price.

If you must...just buy a frame from an online store in the USA (there are several) and have them ship it to a friend or associate you trust in the USA. Have them ship it from one state to another to negate the 6% USA GST (ie California to Nevada). If you have no friend there are other ways that can accomodate the transaction but you have to research that yourself, but its pretty obvious really. Get them to ship over to Oz. Put the price you paid to avoid the risk of being fined on top of the GST + duty. Remember its the $AUD price not the $US price they will apply charges to. So check the current exchange rates.

Unless there is a big difference just wheel and deal for the frame in Oz. RRP can usually be knocked down a bit. If there is a big saving and no compromise here then all is fair in business mate and import her in!! No point paying 50% more here for the same product.

If you purchase from a shop/store overseas you will have to pay the duties and taxes acordingly, plus the freight. but if you buy of an individaul there is no tax or duties. I know this because i have done it twice, and just recently. And the value of the items was well over $1000US.

they are trying to push the local distributor

Santa Cruz has an agreement in place with the on-line shops that they are not to supply out of their own region eg. US shop > OZ buyer = No No!
This has been in place for about 4/5 years now, any Mail-order business in breach of sneaking one thru, can if found out, will lose their Santa Cruz dealership Period!:)
Not really worth it to them to occasioning a sale out of the US, as there is quite a few "Americano`s" willing to take a BULLITT!;)

Yeah it's better if can found someone to hand carry them. I'm gettin my SC Bullit from the SC distributor in Singapore(Two Wheel Action) within next few weeks it'll arrive in Singapore and fortunately there's a courier who can hand carry them to Indonesia which only cost me Rp100.000/Kg where I asume the whole thing with box come up around 5Kg, so Rp500.000 = AU$65
Can't wait till then ehhehehe.....

Yes. my primary job which i get paid for, is entering customs entries.

If I enter a value of C.I.F. 1000 AUD or less, I will not be billing you any GST / DUTY / COMPILE FEE.

Or you could just support the local guys who put a lot of effort into the local sport. With the aussie dollar strong the price difference is gonna be bugger all, and you can forget about warranty on an oversea's frame and shock too. Check my sig for the distributors link so you can compare prices

steps down off his soapbox.....
