G'day mate,

Manitou Slate's are $220ish, 130m of coil sprung travel, won't f*@k the geometry too much, have compression adjustment & come in silver or black.

I could recommend something more expensive (up to your quoted $600 mark) but you're better off saving the rest and buying a DJ or freeride bike, the hardrock is not a DJ or FR bike.

In fact, with the $380 change you could buy a nice DJ specific frame as well. EDIT or some better wheels!

Cheers,

Chris

36's will be waaaayyy out of your price range. Rock shox revelations or pikes will be the go. 140mm of travel. You will need to get a 20mm hub if you get pikes.

I wouldn't want anymore than 130 on a Hardrock frame. Have a look through the For Sale section on here, these ones here (http://www.farkin.net/forums/showthread.php?t=85417) would be a good choice for you IMO.

Go the manitou's. They're sturdy and are about where you want your frame to sit (at 130mm). And buy some wheels/rear wheel as well!

Don't worry about the frame - They're almost bombproof and almost DJ geo. (I said almost)

As Christo rightly stated, it wouldnt be wise to put alot into a Hardrock...better to purchase a DJ specific frame if oyu are to go down that path. If he got any fork with a 20mm axel, it would also require a new hub which in the end is a pricy alternative. As someone said, its like putting a Holden engine in an Excel.

Your best bet would be to hunt around second hand. If you look closely, there are some great deals...your destined to find something in there.

My vote swings towards Marzocchi though. The Drop Off Series, namely the IV version would probably be ideal. There is also a fella on here selling some Marzocchi AM-3s on here for a little under $300. These forks are strong enough to handle the abuse, simple enough to set up and wont break the budget too much. Dirt Jumpers will also fit the bill perfectally!

Second-hand Manitou Shermans (QR dropouts) would also be a pretty good option although you would need to find one with the required dropouts (did they make a QR Sherman?)

Stear clear of Manitiou Stance. Not a very good fork at all athough now that the nitride coating on the uppers has gone, Im sure they do a little better.

Good luck!
