View Full Version : Getting a new wheelset....

I'm looking at getting a new wheelset. Going on a 4X bike (QR front, 135x9 rear).
My first idea was Hope 2 Pro's on Mavic 721's.
Then I thought maybe I could tubeless?
And then I had the idea of using even lighter Mavic XC717, and possibly converting it to tubeless.
I'm a pretty smooth rider, I honestly just don't case jumps (if they are too big, I don't try them ;)) so I really don't think I will need super strength in the rims, but I hate flex in my wheels (that's the main reason I want new wheels).
And I also would like to keep weight at a minimal, without being super expensive.
So I would love opinions on what you wuold buy if you were in my situation.

you could probably also look at something like DT4.2 rims, or the mavic 719 if you're worried about the 717s...
if you wanted to splash out, you could go some crossmax..

Crossmax, $1000 seems justa bit too pricey.

I'd go DT 4.2 rims (400g) with spokes of your choice on DT 240 hubs (165g front, 273g rear).
Possibly use mavic 819 (465g) rims if you want tubeless out of the box.
also consider stans arch (420g) rims which are supposed to be tubeless,
I think Hope Hubs are slower than most though they are quite light for their price, pro II (180g front 265g rear).
These are the options I am looking at for an all mountain wheel set and do rely on you being a truely smooth rider (I'm not, but these aren't going to be my heavy duty jumping/DH wheels)
Oh and finally if you really hate flex in wheels, get a thru axle fork with a dedicated thru axle hub

With the axel's you were talking about.
One main reason I was thinking of the Hope 2 Pro's was to use their 10mm bolt up rear hub.
And as for the front, well my forks only come in QR (Fox 32 Talas RLC). So I'll have to deal with it..
When racing on the weekend, coming into corners my back wheel was flexxing so much I kept slowing down to look if I had a flat. It just felt like the tyre rolling aroudn on the rim (was running like 45psi so it wasn't).

Don't get Crossmax (or any wheel with Mavic hubs, as you'll get over them for 4x- reliability and excessive weight). I'd go Hope Pro 2s or DT 340s (or 240s if you can afford them) simply because they're light and reliable. For rims, DT 5.1s are light and strong (lighter than a 721), otherwise any welded AM/Trail rim is a good alternative. Mavic 719s or 519s are the equivalent. If you're light, smooth or don't mind keeping an eye on them you can look at lighter xc style rims like the DT 4.1/2, Mavic 717, etc.
I wouldn't be worried about a bolt up hub, as a well built wheel won't have that sort of flex in it.

I'm still quite a light rider (only around 65kg's) and I am smooth coming from a BMX background.
For some reason, I'm still learning towards the Hope 2 Pro hubs with 721's with tubes.
Mainly for just having the peice of mind that won't brake, and the extra weight really isn't that excessive. And tubeless for me at the moment, doesn't overly appeal yet, XC tubes are so light.

Fair enough. I still reckon run the DT 5.1 though, its a fair bit lighter, and with the higher pressures of 4x you won't damage it at all.

Well:
721 ~ 600g
5.1 ~ 500g
717 ~ 400g
The 5.1 looks to be quite a middle wieght, might be a keeper.
Or should I bee a weight weenie and go the full XC rim?

I won't buy DT rims again. My Wife and I bought new VP Frees which come stock with DT rims (the FR model) and hubs. Within two weeks of riding all four wheels had big dings. I believe they are the softest rim I have riden! (I have been riding other rims like Mavic 721's, Sun Rims and Crossmax's for years without any such problems) The hubs are beautiful though...
cheers
he only rides this bike on 4x tracks and bmx tracks and around the street a bit though, plus hes damn smooth so he cant really ding a wheel unless he cases bad

totally aware of the "old" model FR rims. but it wasn't that they were "soft" as such. it was a bad extrusion shape.
The new FR6.1 uses the same basic shape as the 5.1d. Which has proven (so far) to be damn tough.
and on that... almost all of the FR6.1d rims that we saw... were warranted with the new extrusion ones... so far (fingers crossed) in the 6 months that the new ones have been out there... no warranties. (touch wood)

I'm running 5.1ds on my Intense 5.5 and strongly recommend them. I've heard of the soft alloy stories but have had zero probs with mine.
Light, strong, and build up nice and stiff on Pro II hubs with db spokes.
For the record I'm a clyde and run a 2.35 @ 30 -32 psi front and a 2.1 @ 32 -36 psi rear.

i didn't want to start a new thread, so i was just wondering how the 5.1d would go dh'ing? i've seen that hill runs them but does he get a new set every race or do they hold up?
Cheers Tom
