View Full Version : This is just NOT on!
I am NOT going to name this Farkin member but this is a copy of a PM I got in the last couple of days.
Hey grip.
You might remember i was going to send my frame to you to be re-welded because it had a crack in it? But anyway i found out that a freind of mine's brother welds bike frames for a living. So insted of sending the whole way dont to you he did it for free. I am sure your' welding would have been as good more likley better. But i didint have the funds. Anyway i was wondering. Th4e welder said not to build the bike up and ride it for at least 2 weeks. Because the weld was still healing or somthing. Even though it seems completly dry find to look at and touch. Is there some reson i couldnt ride it?? I thought once a weld was cold it was ready for use?? Anyway i have a 7005 alloy frame if that means anything. But yeah i couldnt see why it would still be healing for 2 weeks. After it was welded. Anyway i know you know what your talking about and a value your opinion so yeah what do you think?? Thanks mate.
And I've got to tell you I am NOT happy! In fact I'm pretty damn sick of bending over backwards to provide help and info to people like this (via lots of PMs and emails... which ALL COST ME MONEY!) only to find that they not only then give the frame to someone else to fix (which is OK because it's a free world)...
BUT...
... then have the cheek to turn round and ask for my advice and opinion ON that other person's repair after wasting my time and bleeding ME for help and info!
Well my first opinion is this, mate..... I don't give a fat rat's clacker if your bloke who "welds bike frames for a living" also happens to weld up NASA space shuttles! I've written a hell of a lot on this site about the difference between BUILDING frames and REPAIRING frames and if you choose to ignore that or are too stupid to understand it then you deserve what you get.... and what you'll get is that if your frame WAS simply "WELDED UP" rather than repaired then it WILL break again very quickly. I'm sure you wont after this... but don't bother contacting me about it when it does break.
And my other opinion is... Mate, you have got way too much cheek! If you want to know what he was talking about (it's called "ageing" by the way) then go to trade school and TAFE and Uni like I did... or buy a book...
OR....
... if you trust this guy enough to "weld up" your frame in the first place then why not just trust him all the way and listen to what he tells you? And if you don't understand what he tells you, then ask HIM to explain it... NOT ME!. Christ almighty... HE did the repair... NOT ME! Or is it that you don't feel "right" about questioning what he says? Or don't you feel right about bothering him? (but obviously it's ok to waste my time, eh?) Or do you simply want a second opinion to make you feel better (more confident) about your choice?
Like I said... I have NO problem with people taking their work elsewhere... but DON'T expect me to then bend over backwards to be your font of knowledge, because that feels a lot more like you're asking me to bend over FRONTWARDS for a totally different reason!
get it all out grip *hugs* dont worry about fools like these they dont deserve to have the fine skills of jon weaving touch their frame
Ah gees, that is just stupid. Take it easy Grip, we know you do your best to help everyone but that PM you got is just not on, if that guy 'welds frames for a living' then he really should know what he is talking about.
I think you taught that person a lesson!
Good on ya!
Jon, I have this Space shuttle (long story)...Anyway I got this guy who welds up Nasa Space shuttles for a living, and he said I couldn't fly it into orbit for at least 2 weeks.
Im very disappointed with his advice, so I thought id come seeking your approval..do you fink i kould flies it now?
Thanks mate!

No worries "mate"!
But to stay on track here.... Yes Josh, your space shuttle will be fine to fly immediately. Just remember the golden rule though... "If something goes wrong and you need to kiss your arse goodbye, it's always more pleasant if that arse wasn't just used to shit in someone's face!"

common grip... you can do better than that. I still think you're holding back :)
Ahahah, I get this a bit too
"oh, I wanted to buy a xxxx bike, I was wondering what size would fit me", then they pull out an online sites printout, expect us to give them a free sizing assessment so they can run off and buy it elsewhere.
Pppppppfffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttttt
Shopping around is one thing, blatantly using people for their helpful advice is another.
Next time someone does that to you Grip, I'd suggest stab them in the eye with a soldering iron, but I realise you've got things that alot more fun to stab with than just soldering irons, things that burn white hot, that'll teach them!!
(but obviously it's ok to waste my time, eh?)
Grip this person clearly dosen't realize that your not just Grip on farkin.net, you are actually trying to run a business succesfully. I think people need to value any help they receive from you considering that you go out of your way to provide it for them.
So Grip, thanks for the time and effort you put into helping us with any thing that you can, and making farkin a better place for all of us (in general)!
Cheers
Dane
Poor baby...
Fuck off Matty.
after meeting grip and getting to play with a shinny new workstand I can vouch for his helpfulness.
matty, honestly, just shutup.
Next time someone does that grip oxy out a kidney or two :P

That sucks Donkey nad's Grip... How could someone be such a dog's ass to such a nice guy... I'm tired, I think I'll quit the abuse.
Anyways I think some of us have been abit guilty something like this... The forks are coming Grip, just my eyes are bigger than my wallet at the moment trying to get the SEXY BIKE built :P
But hey, Cheeks is another thing, why dont he ask his mate why he cant ride the bike for two weeks. And just out of curiosity WHY, what is this aging, me thinks it's letting some high stress join cure or something... corect? (Sorry I didnt get told bout it in my 6 sessions of welding at trade school)...
Mmmm my post makes no sence, I think I will head to bed and let grip have his way with this lad with the Oxy, maybe weld him up a new brain too :P

Artificial ageing(as opposed to natural aging) is when the material is alowed cool at an extended rate to ensure it reaches its maximum hardness and stress level. You are pretty much on the right track with what you said cul. Theres plenty of web info that goes into much more detail on it, but youll end up doing half an engineering course before you cover half of it.

Thats pretty stupid, i can see were your coming from... why couldnt he ask his welder that he got to do it ??
why couldnt he ask his welder that he got to do it ??
His welder told him too leave it for two weeks. He wanted grip to say: "no problems go ride it today!"

I think that sounds the best reason I've heard so far.... it actually makes sense.
Grip shares his knowledge freely, he has certainly given me some good advice.
If people are up front re their motives, most people will still give advice, but what the PM guy did is a bit damned rude!!!
I've asked my local BSG stuff about a bike I wasn't buying from him, BUT I told him that first!!!!
The BSG also knows that I already bought one bike from him and that I'm always going to be around getting stuff, but even though this bike wasn't coming from him he still took over an hour to go through the pros and cons of 2 bikes, both from elsewhere!!!!
I'd say Grip's comment that the kid doesn't realise that Grip has a business to run, not just play on the PC all day is also probably pretty close to the mark as well.
Some lessons to be learned here, no need for fights though.
Jon, that's pretty shit, and I know it's not the first time that kind of thing has happened to you. That said, that kind of act seems more often caused by naivete and ignorance rather than arrogance and selfishness. Which, by the way, is still very poor form.
Moral of the story: if you're getting something for free (ie advice), don't push your luck.

If I was Grip, I woulda said "yeah it'll be fine - go and practise your nose-wheelies..."
But the real Jon is far too ethical to do that. Maybe.

the thing im loving about this thread is that grip left the guy anonymous, so rather then being able to defend his actions (as then we'd all know who he/she was) they have to sit back and watch.

Yeah i could sympathise with that grip... People like that are the tire kickers of the world... Want to know everything and get the right deal and then go to there mates place.
I had the same problem when trying to sell my motorcycles

LOL 100% correctness rite there
GO on defend your actions punk  we wont bite
You fuck with grip you got a whole pile of angry users that respect and acknowledge that grip has areal business to run so we dont fuck him around.
aahhh that unknown guy just got rolled!
SAFO!!!!
(suk a fat one)
Let me get one thing straight. I have NO problem with answering ANY questions (that I can help with)... from anyone... AT ALL!
The only thing I have a problem with is bad manners and being taken advantage of (being "used")
So to any of you that have been reading this thread and thinking that maybe I was pissed with YOU... NO that is NOT the case. And I am NOT expecting work out of anyone just because I answer a question or two... and I'm actually really happy to help out with info etc.... and believe it or not I don’t get pissed that often and if I was pissed at you you'd know it because I dislike any sort of agro and would rather clear the air quickly! So feel free to ask away (it makes me feel wanted!)
BUT maybe some people need to make themselves a little clearer! I just got another PM from this guy and NOW THAT HE EXPLAINS the situation better, what he did sounds reasonable!
But the bottom-line is it didn't SOUND reasonable to me at all in his first PM... in fact it SOUNDED like... "oh I WAS going to send my frame to you but got a better offer, but now I need some help and advice about what this other guy did to it... so can you help me out, Grip?" And that just made me see red!
So maybe have more of a think about how you explain things next time and you wont cop the serve, because the fact is when you WRITE something (as opposed to SAYING it face to face) you WILL be taken at your word... because people have nothing to go on OTHER THAN THOSE WORDS.
Oh, and TuPlang is absolutely right about me not naming this guy. I thought I was doing the right thing in trying to make a point WITHOUT it becoming a personal flaming, but in reality all I did was put him in a no-win situation by doing that and I openly apologise for that.
And to his great credit this Farkin member has just contacted me to apologise... so because you have to admire anyone who takes responsibility for what they do and is man enough (mature enough) to apologise like that, then as far as I'm concerned the matter is closed... never happened in fact... and if he needs it I hope I get the chance to help him out with info etc down the track a bit.
GO on defend your actions punk  we wont bite
You fuck with grip you got a whole pile of angry users that respect and acknowledge that grip has areal business to run so we dont fuck him around.
And you really think a public internet lynch-mob is what we need, for either Grip, the site, or just in general? What right would we have to personally attack this "punk" anyway?
Thankfully the matter is resolved, and I would assume rather sensibly and maturely.
Props to you grip, nice guys might finish last, but they sure do make alot of friends along the way.
woah woah hold up you abuse WAY more people than me where do you get off on saying that  Your always saying mobs are a good idea

Ha!!!! So THAT'S who all those people are standing round the finish line when I roll through hours after everyone else.

Don't make this personal. I always say "lynch mobs are great" in a very sarcastic manner. And you'll be hard pressed to find me abusing someone for the sake of it without a just cause.
This is grips fight, he's resolved it, there is no need for you to go on swearing about angry Farkin members ganging up on this one guy. You've done a mighty fine backpedal right here, but we all know that's not the way to ride.

What, you'd rather put the pair of you in a situation where he could win instead of you? ;)
It was me   And yes i have to admit my first PM was very very rude, and sounded very much like i was using Grip for his information. I really should have explained myself better because what i wrote wasnt at all what i meant. But yeah I fully understand where Grip is coming from. And i formaly apologise for my actions. :D And yeah thanks to Grip for forigiving and forgetting and for helping me out with info. Your a champ.

oMG? It was you! PHEW! I thought it was me!!!
lol not really... but Grip I might be asking about bike racks in the near(ish) future you'll have your chance to rip me to threads then okie?
*skews topic*
hey don't spose' you've ever done a bike rack/trailer for a motorcycle before?

TJ, coming on and apologising takes a lot of balls man. Often when you say stuff it dosnt come out how you ment to say it. V. respectable thing admitting it tho, even after all the bad stuff being said.

TJ... I agree with everything that ROM said. We had already sorted this out via PMs so there was no need for you to go public at all. But obviously you've got more balls than most! And for that you have my respect.
Cheers
